Na semana passada tivemos a oportunidade de trabalhar com o suplento de Sábado do jornal "i", Livros i Viagens (LiV) ao ilustrar o artigo "Livros para as suas férias", o conceito partiu da redacção, gostámos à primeira, caminho andado para este resultado final.

This past week we had the chance to work with "i" newspaper suplement LiV (Livros i Viagens - Books & Travel) illustrating the article "Livros para as suas férias" (Books for your holidays), the concept originated from the newsdesk, we liked it at first sight, a good half-way to this result.

Este fim-de-semana o The Lisbon Studio apresentou o Lisbon Studio Mag 1, no Festival Amadora BD, gtrata-se du uma publicação semestral contendo dos artistas residentes e também residentes anteriores. Sendo o primeiro número está ainda em evolução e em processo de amadurecimento para uma melhor versão, o número dois está na gráfica e o terceiro já tem novas directrizes. Esperemos que sejam os primeiros de muitos!

This weekend The Lisbon Studio presented Mag 1, at Amadora BD Festival, Lisbon Studio's Mag consists in a bi-anual publication from in house talents, not only the current residents but also former members. Being the first issue it's still evolving and growing to a more mature and, hopefully, better version, number two is printing and we have new guidelines for number 3. Let's hope it's the first of many!

Esta é a minha interpretação acerca disso, feita para o jornal "i", Index, suplemento deste Sábado.

We didn' nkow, but Luther Blissett, in real life a former english soccer glory, became an "avatar" for a the worldwide, underground and couter culture, like a Robin Hood from the information era.
This is his my take on this, made for Index, "i" newspaper Saturday's Magazine.

Sempre gostei do Daredevil, consequência natural de ler as excelentes séries pela dupla Frank Miller e Klaus Janson e mais tarde, Miller e David Mazuchelli - assim sendo de vez em quando Matt Murdock aparece nos meus desenhos sem que para isso tenha feito algum esforço aparente... como neste desenho rápido.

I've always loved Daredevil, a natural consequence of reading Frank Miller, Klaus Janson and later, Miller and David Mazuchelli's excelent series - so Matt Murdock appears once and a while in my drawings, without thinking so... like this quick one.

The Lisbon Studio MAG#01

After all the buzz, never-ending chatter, studio meetings, a lot of hard work but also a lot of fun, The Lisbon Studio’s first collective output is ready to go to print. It’s all very exciting!

With an intriguing mix of comics, illustration, short stories and photography, it’s a good portrait of the mild chaos and creative outpouring going on in the studio. Half art-book, half magazine, this first issue features work by Ana Freitas, Joana Toste, João Paulo António, João Tércio, Nuno Duarte, Patrícia Furtado, Pepedelrey, Pedro Potier, Ricardo Blanco, Ricardo Cabral, Ricardo Venâncio, Rui Lacas, Sara Barbas , and was beautifully designed by Tiago Tavares.

It will see the light of day in the end of May, in the International Comics Festival of Beja, where The Lisbon Studio will also have a exhibition, and will be available to purchase on several specialty bookshops and online, on the upcoming website. We’ll keep you posted!

Recentemente fui convidado a ilustrar as capas de uma tetralogia de fantasia, escrita por Madalena Santos jovem talento da editora "1001 Mundos". Sendo o quarto tomo, editado num futuro próximo.
Pedro Reisinho, Art Director pediu-me um estilo mais tradicional, como que pintado, de fantasia e uma lógica para o equadramento da trilogia. Optei por uma lógica de retratos, o que dizem de vossa justiça?

Recently i was invited to illustrate a tetralogy of fantasy covers, written by Madalena Santos, young talent from "1001 Mundos" Publisher. The fourth book will be published in the near future.
Pedro Reisinho, Art director, asked me if i could give a more traditional\fantasy feel an-almost-like-painted-look to them, and find a layout wich would stick with the 3 covers. I opted for portraits layout, What do you guys think?

Como ainda não posso postar trabalho novo, que (surpresa!) já é algum, passo a divulgar a BD que tenho no prelo, "Life Trade".
Uma história curta a duas cores a ser publicada em Itália, Milão pela "Passenger Press" em inglês, subordinada ao tema "The Movies".
O formato é bastante estranho, o k para mim é um desafio, começa em página par e prolonga-se por 3 pranchas em tríptico desdobrável...

Since I can' post my recent works, wich (surprise!) are a lot, i'll advertive the Work In Progress, "Life Trade".
It's a short storie in two colours, to be publihed by "Passenger Press" in Italy, Milan, according to the subject "The Movies".
The format is quite odd, wich for me is a challenge, begins in a even page and spreads for three spread folded pages...

De volta de Angoulême. Este ano foi um fartote.
A organização do festival está de parabéns, surpreendeu-nos com uma novíssima Tenda Jovens Talentos (Jeunes Talents Boulle), onde podémos encontrar editores das maiores companhias dispostos a ver os nossos portfólios. O que ajudou bastante em centralidade e organização.

Quanto a resultados, só o tempo o dirá.

A El-Pep, editora da "casa" [link] teve uma banca na Tenda NY, lado a lado com a Cili Com Carne [link] e Passenger Press [link], o que não podia ser uma circumstância mais feliz, pois dudémos falar de projectos, estar na palhaçada e vender ao mesmo tempo.

Back from Angoulême. This year has been a blast.
The Festival's organization surprised us (artists&;pros) with an all-new Young Talents Tent (Jeunes Talents Boulle), where we could finf the Publisher's Editors willing to see our portfolios. This helped a lot, on centrality and organization.

As for results, only the future will say.

El Pep, our "in-house-publisher" [link] had one booth at NY Boulle/Tent side by side with our good friends Chili Com Carne Association [link] and Passenger Press [link] This couldn't be a happier circumstance for we all could talk about future projects, joking around and still do the job of selling.

Recentemente, Dezembro passado, tive o previlégio de ser convidado por Eric Skillman (ericskillman.com), Director de Arte na Criterion Collection, Ilustrador, escritor e (para minha surpresa) um excelente colorista, para desenhar uma história dele para "EGG Hard-Boiled Stories" um livro que contém talentos como Connor Willumsen, Jhomar Soriano, Joe Dellagata e Dan Duncan.
A fasquia estava bem alta, o que me envaideceu. Só isso já era motivação de sobra, mas a história do Eric e os seus pontos de vista eclipsaram quaisquer dúvidas.

É a minha primeira colaboração internacional, mesmo assim fiquei orgulhoso do nosso trabalho, o que acham?

Recently, this past December, I had the privilege of being invited by Eric Skillman (ericskillman.com), Art Director for the Criterion Collection, Illustrator, Writer and (to my surprise) a wonderfull colorist, to work in "EGG Hard-Boiled Stories" featuring talents like Connor Willumsen, Jhomar Soriano, Joe Dellagata and Dan Duncan.
The bar was high and I was really flattered to enter.
This alone was motivation enough, but Eric's story and points of view, really of sold the deal for me.

Como Al Gore diria, acredito em reciclagem.
Esta ilustração fez-se sem pensar muito, uso sempre uma folha aparte para limpar o pincel e o aparo. Então começei devagarinho a dar um sentido a todos aqueles traços e foi assim que saiu...
Não é realmente uma ilustração (acabada e tal...), é um resto barulhento...

This one was done without much thinking, I always use a separate sheet to clean the excess out of my brush and sable. So I started, slowly, giving a sense to all that cleaning strokes and this was what came out of it

"Layouts" fresquinhos e acabadinhos de sair do scanner!

Desafio-vos a tentar perceber estes gatafunhos!
Claro que seria mais fácil com o "script", mas bolas! É o processo...

Essencialmente são para me manter com os pés no chão e estabelecer o ritmo da história de maneira a ter o desafio & coerência em cada fase de produção, visto que estou a fazer tudo do "script" à balonagem.

Esta história em particular tem vários e diferentes ambientes, o personagem principal está em viagem... acho que isso, e uma grande luta de rua em Macau são os maiores desafios no que toca ao desenho...

Quanto ao "script", tenho que admitir que me estou a esticar... já que estou a trabalhar com dois grandes "clichés" portugueses, o marinheiro e o fadista.

I dare you guys, to try and understand these things!
Of course it's easier with a script and all, but what the heck!
It's the process...

They're essentially to keep me grounded and establlish the pace of the story, in order to have a kind of challenge & coherence in each stage of the production since i'm doing everything from script to lettering.

This story in particular has a bit of different enviroments, the main character is travelling... so I guess that, and a big street fight in Macau, are the greatest drawing challenges...

As for the script, I realize I'm stretching the rope here... since i'm working with two portuguese clichés, the sea traveller and the fado singer/guitar player.

Aqui está, completa e revisto o meu último bébé...
Chama-se "A Fisgada" e foi inspirada em relatos de jornal acerca do (sempre crescente) tráfico de órgãos. O que me interessava aqui eram as pessoas por isso afastei-me de uma leitura mais realista e detalhada desse tráfico puz-me a brincar com o envolvimento pessoal dos personagens...

It's called "The Catch" and was inspired in newspapers reports about the (ever growing) organ trafficking. What interested me here, were the people so i went beyond a more realistic and detailed look to the traffic, and focused more on the characters personal involvment...

Agora já temos a prancha artefinalizada com pincel nº1 e tinta da china mais várias canetas digitalizada.
A seguir... iremos corrigir alguns erros, fazer chuva no terceiro e quarto painel e acrescentar uns cinzentos para dar "temperatura" e "mood" à cena.

Now we have the page inked with number one paintbrush in china's ink and a few pens scanned.
Next... well'be fixing some mistakes and add rain in the third and fourth panel, and add a few greys to add temperature and mood to the page.

Já queria fazer isto há algum tempo, postar o processo de execução de uma prancha de BD, desde o texto á balonagem...

1º- Preciso de ter o texto mais ou menos final, pois só assim posso brincar e fazer corresponder as expressões dos personagens e cenários.

2º- É melhor planear antes pois corremos o risco de gastar mais páginas ou esgotar-se a criatividade a meio de uma página.

3º- Um lápis mais ou menos solto, conforme o grau de confiança que temos em cada plano, gosto de ter os lápis descontraídos pois preciso de alguma liberdade para passar a tinta da china.

I've wanted to do yhis for a while now, to post the execution process of one sequential page, from text to lettering...

1st- Usually i need the text mor or less final, because then i can play with the character's and set's expressions.

2nd- It´s better to plan ahead, because one risks spending more pages than he should, or running out of creativity in the middle of the page.

3rd- A kind of loose pencils, according to the trust you have in each particular panel, i like to have relaxed pencils, because i need some freedom to ink.

Este fim-de-semana começou o 4º Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja, e abriu em beleza com o lançamento do Venham + 5 nº5.
Desta feita em jeito comemorativo, versão XXL, pois tem reunidos 58 autores de Portugal, Brasil, Espanha, Alemanha e dos Estados Unidos.
Já tenho o meu exemplar, e digo-vos tá gordinho...
A convite da organização (obrigado Paulo!) participei com esta banda desenhada que vos deixo na língua de Shakespeare, para uma divulgação mais alargada.

This weekend started the 4º Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja (4th Beja's International Comics Festival), and it opened with a Bang, since the organization released the fifth "Venham + 5". This time in a commemorative fashion, version XXL in it we can find 58 authors from Portugal, Brasil, Spain, Germany and United States. I already have my copy, and let me tell you guys, it's really juicy...
Being invited by the organization (thanks Paulo!) we participated with this story, wich i leave you guys in Shaskespeare's language for a wider promotion.

Novamente ao jantar, desta feita na Tertúlia do Lino e já com uma concentração etílica apreciável saiu-me o visual da "boneca" que será protagonista da próxima BD que já está no prelo...temos sedução, inocência, órgãos, sexo e sangue de sobra. Tudo num modesto pacote de seis páginas...brevemente...

Again at dinner, this time at Lino's comics gathering and with a significative percentage of alcohol came out the visual concept of my new "babe", leading character of my next story wich is already being made...hw have seduction, innocence, organs, sex and blood for all...upcoming...

New York Comic Con

Próxima segunda-feira dia 13 vou a Nova Iorque. Com vários companheiros de estúdio o Rui Lacas, Ricardo Venâncio, João Lemos, Nuno "Plati", Ricardo Tércio e o Paulo Prazeres da Droid I.D..
Será o meu primeiro voo intercontinental e justo para a grande maçã, mas não será apenas em prazer iremos ao New York Comic Con, onde teremos uma pequena banca onde podemos vender prints e desenhos na hora, para além da concentração de editoras permitir falar e fazer contactos com as pessos certas, ou então não.
Como não tive tempo para executar uma boa série de ilustrações, irei fazer umas quantas impressões destes dois desenhos a lápis, um do Batman o nosso morcego preferido, outro do Calcanhar de Aquiles.
Desejem-me sorte...

Next Monday day 13, i'm going to New York. Alongside several studiomates Rui Lacas, Ricardo Venâncio, João Lemos, Nuno "Plati", Ricardo Tércio and Paulo Prazeres from Droid I.D..
It will my first intercontinental flight and right on the big apple, it won't be only for the pleasure we'll be at the New York Comic Con, were we'll have a small booth, were we can sell prints and drawings on site, and the Editors concentration will allow to talk and make contact with the right persons, or not.
Since i hadn't any time to make a good serie of illustrations, i'll print these two pencil drawings, one of Batman and the other of Aquille's Heel.
Wish me luck...

Corações Plásticos | Plastic Hearts

Há já umas semanas, a produtora Andar Filmes convidou-me para um dos meus trabalhos preferidos, um cartaz de cinema. O filme em questão "Corações Plásticos" é uma curta-metragem escrito e realizado por Sérgio Brás d'Almeida, foca-se em diversos em casais presos numa "bicha" de trânsito infernal com nervos à flor da pele...

O processo foi bastante fluido, começei por alaborar diversos esboços que mostrei ao Sérgio, depois combinámos os elementos que achámos mais relevantes para descrever a narrativa do filme. Depois de arte-finalizada, corrigimos valores de cor e passámos a design no qual tive a preciosa ajuda do Sérgio Duque (ver links dos marujos).

A couple weeks ago, Andar Filmes productions invited me to do one of my favorite kind of works, a movie poster. This picture "Corações Plásticos" (Plastic Hearts) a short-movie, written and directed by Sérgio Brás d'Almeida focuses in several couples stuck in a infernal traffic jam, with their nerves on a boiling point...

The process was quite fluid, started elaborating various sketches wich i showed to Sérgio, then we combined the elements that we thought more vital to describe the picture's story. After inked, we changed some colour values and went to design, in wich i had Sergio Duque's precious help (see sailor's links).

Tenho andado bastante ocupado, com os projectos correntes Calcanhar de Aquiles e Psycho Whip, acabei uma bd de seis páginas para o Venham + Cinco de Beja, mas como não posso postar nada antes que seja publicado, aqui vai uma avaria...

Partindo de uma textura que o Lacas fabricou usando uma efregona e ecolines. Ou seja a técnica mista mais estranha que já usei... esfregona+ecolines+papel+scanner+photoshop

I've been quite busy lately, occupied with ongoing prjects like Aqulles Heel and Psycho Whip and just finished one short story for "Venham + Cinco" from Beja, but sinc i can't post anything that's not yet published her goes one more fantasy...
