Noise Scraps

Esta ilustração fez-se sem pensar muito, uso sempre uma folha aparte para limpar o pincel e o aparo. Então começei devagarinho a dar um sentido a todos aqueles traços e foi assim que saiu...
Não é realmente uma ilustração (acabada e tal...), é um resto barulhento...

This one was done without much thinking, I always use a separate sheet to clean the excess out of my brush and sable. So I started, slowly, giving a sense to all that cleaning strokes and this was what came out of it

"Layouts" fresquinhos e acabadinhos de sair do scanner!

Desafio-vos a tentar perceber estes gatafunhos!
Claro que seria mais fácil com o "script", mas bolas! É o processo...

Essencialmente são para me manter com os pés no chão e estabelecer o ritmo da história de maneira a ter o desafio & coerência em cada fase de produção, visto que estou a fazer tudo do "script" à balonagem.

Esta história em particular tem vários e diferentes ambientes, o personagem principal está em viagem... acho que isso, e uma grande luta de rua em Macau são os maiores desafios no que toca ao desenho...

Quanto ao "script", tenho que admitir que me estou a esticar... já que estou a trabalhar com dois grandes "clichés" portugueses, o marinheiro e o fadista.

I dare you guys, to try and understand these things!
Of course it's easier with a script and all, but what the heck!
It's the process...

They're essentially to keep me grounded and establlish the pace of the story, in order to have a kind of challenge & coherence in each stage of the production since i'm doing everything from script to lettering.

This story in particular has a bit of different enviroments, the main character is travelling... so I guess that, and a big street fight in Macau, are the greatest drawing challenges...

As for the script, I realize I'm stretching the rope here... since i'm working with two portuguese clichés, the sea traveller and the fado singer/guitar player.

A Fisgada | The Catch

Aqui está, completa e revisto o meu último bébé...
Chama-se "A Fisgada" e foi inspirada em relatos de jornal acerca do (sempre crescente) tráfico de órgãos. O que me interessava aqui eram as pessoas por isso afastei-me de uma leitura mais realista e detalhada desse tráfico puz-me a brincar com o envolvimento pessoal dos personagens...

Here it is, revised and complete, my last baby...
It's called "The Catch" and was inspired in newspapers reports about the (ever growing) organ trafficking. What interested me here, were the people so i went beyond a more realistic and detailed look to the traffic, and focused more on the characters personal involvment...

Aqui temos a prancha, com cinzentos e legendada, pronta para o prelo.


Here we have the page greytoned and subtitled, ready for print.

Agora já temos a prancha artefinalizada com pincel nº1 e tinta da china mais várias canetas digitalizada.
A seguir... iremos corrigir alguns erros, fazer chuva no terceiro e quarto painel e acrescentar uns cinzentos para dar "temperatura" e "mood" à cena.


Now we have the page inked with number one paintbrush in china's ink and a few pens scanned.
Next... well'be fixing some mistakes and add rain in the third and fourth panel, and add a few greys to add temperature and mood to the page.

Process

Já queria fazer isto há algum tempo, postar o processo de execução de uma prancha de BD, desde o texto á balonagem...

1º- Preciso de ter o texto mais ou menos final, pois só assim posso brincar e fazer corresponder as expressões dos personagens e cenários.

2º- É melhor planear antes pois corremos o risco de gastar mais páginas ou esgotar-se a criatividade a meio de uma página.

3º- Um lápis mais ou menos solto, conforme o grau de confiança que temos em cada plano, gosto de ter os lápis descontraídos pois preciso de alguma liberdade para passar a tinta da china.




I've wanted to do yhis for a while now, to post the execution process of one sequential page, from text to lettering...

1st- Usually i need the text mor or less final, because then i can play with the character's and set's expressions.

2nd- It´s better to plan ahead, because one risks spending more pages than he should, or running out of creativity in the middle of the page.

3rd- A kind of loose pencils, according to the trust you have in each particular panel, i like to have relaxed pencils, because i need some freedom to ink.

E Venham Mais 58!

Este fim-de-semana começou o 4º Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja, e abriu em beleza com o lançamento do Venham + 5 nº5.
Desta feita em jeito comemorativo, versão XXL, pois tem reunidos 58 autores de Portugal, Brasil, Espanha, Alemanha e dos Estados Unidos.
Já tenho o meu exemplar, e digo-vos tá gordinho...
A convite da organização (obrigado Paulo!) participei com esta banda desenhada que vos deixo na língua de Shakespeare, para uma divulgação mais alargada.








This weekend started the 4º Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja (4th Beja's International Comics Festival), and it opened with a Bang, since the organization released the fifth "Venham + 5". This time in a commemorative fashion, version XXL in it we can find 58 authors from Portugal, Brasil, Spain, Germany and United States. I already have my copy, and let me tell you guys, it's really juicy...
Being invited by the organization (thanks Paulo!) we participated with this story, wich i leave you guys in Shaskespeare's language for a wider promotion.

New York Comic Con

Próxima segunda-feira dia 13 vou a Nova Iorque. Com vários companheiros de estúdio o Rui Lacas, Ricardo Venâncio, João Lemos, Nuno "Plati", Ricardo Tércio e o Paulo Prazeres da Droid I.D..
Será o meu primeiro voo intercontinental e justo para a grande maçã, mas não será apenas em prazer iremos ao New York Comic Con, onde teremos uma pequena banca onde podemos vender prints e desenhos na hora, para além da concentração de editoras permitir falar e fazer contactos com as pessos certas, ou então não.
Como não tive tempo para executar uma boa série de ilustrações, irei fazer umas quantas impressões destes dois desenhos a lápis, um do Batman o nosso morcego preferido, outro do Calcanhar de Aquiles.
Desejem-me sorte...




Next Monday day 13, i'm going to New York. Alongside several studiomates Rui Lacas, Ricardo Venâncio, João Lemos, Nuno "Plati", Ricardo Tércio and Paulo Prazeres from Droid I.D..
It will my first intercontinental flight and right on the big apple, it won't be only for the pleasure we'll be at the New York Comic Con, were we'll have a small booth, were we can sell prints and drawings on site, and the Editors concentration will allow to talk and make contact with the right persons, or not.
Since i hadn't any time to make a good serie of illustrations, i'll print these two pencil drawings, one of Batman and the other of Aquille's Heel.
Wish me luck...
