Not long ago Michael Woods invited me to do a story for Outlaw Territory Two - Image Comics, i replied---

Previewing "The Wheel Turns" written by D.K. Stockton, drawn and inked by me, and colors by the great Eric Skillman.

Scheduled to hit the stores by the end of this year (I'll warn as soon as it's solicited).

Tetralogia 1001 Mundos

Recentemente fui convidado a ilustrar as capas de uma tetralogia de fantasia, escrita por Madalena Santos jovem talento da editora "1001 Mundos". Sendo o quarto tomo, editado num futuro próximo.
Pedro Reisinho, Art Director pediu-me um estilo mais tradicional, como que pintado, de fantasia e uma lógica para o equadramento da trilogia. Optei por uma lógica de retratos, o que dizem de vossa justiça?



Recently i was invited to illustrate a tetralogy of fantasy covers, written by Madalena Santos, young talent from "1001 Mundos" Publisher. The fourth book will be published in the near future.
Pedro Reisinho, Art director, asked me if i could give a more traditional\fantasy feel an-almost-like-painted-look to them, and find a layout wich would stick with the 3 covers. I opted for portraits layout, What do you guys think?

"Moving Life"

Como ainda não posso postar trabalho novo, que (surpresa!) já é algum, passo a divulgar a BD que tenho no prelo, "Life Trade".
Uma história curta a duas cores a ser publicada em Itália, Milão pela "Passenger Press" em inglês, subordinada ao tema "The Movies".
O formato é bastante estranho, o k para mim é um desafio, começa em página par e prolonga-se por 3 pranchas em tríptico desdobrável...




Since I can' post my recent works, wich (surprise!) are a lot, i'll advertive the Work In Progress, "Life Trade".
It's a short storie in two colours, to be publihed by "Passenger Press" in Italy, Milan, according to the subject "The Movies".
The format is quite odd, wich for me is a challenge, begins in a even page and spreads for three spread folded pages...

Angouleme 2009

De volta de Angoulême. Este ano foi um fartote.
A organização do festival está de parabéns, surpreendeu-nos com uma novíssima Tenda Jovens Talentos (Jeunes Talents Boulle), onde podémos encontrar editores das maiores companhias dispostos a ver os nossos portfólios. O que ajudou bastante em centralidade e organização.

Quanto a resultados, só o tempo o dirá.

A El-Pep, editora da "casa" [link] teve uma banca na Tenda NY, lado a lado com a Cili Com Carne [link] e Passenger Press [link], o que não podia ser uma circumstância mais feliz, pois dudémos falar de projectos, estar na palhaçada e vender ao mesmo tempo.

Back from Angoulême. This year has been a blast.
The Festival's organization surprised us (artists&;pros) with an all-new Young Talents Tent (Jeunes Talents Boulle), where we could finf the Publisher's Editors willing to see our portfolios. This helped a lot, on centrality and organization.

As for results, only the future will say.

El Pep, our "in-house-publisher" [link] had one booth at NY Boulle/Tent side by side with our good friends Chili Com Carne Association [link] and Passenger Press [link] This couldn't be a happier circumstance for we all could talk about future projects, joking around and still do the job of selling.

Below The Fold - Eric Skillman & JCoelho

Recentemente, Dezembro passado, tive o previlégio de ser convidado por Eric Skillman (ericskillman.com), Director de Arte na Criterion Collection, Ilustrador, escritor e (para minha surpresa) um excelente colorista, para desenhar uma história dele para "EGG Hard-Boiled Stories" um livro que contém talentos como Connor Willumsen, Jhomar Soriano, Joe Dellagata e Dan Duncan.
A fasquia estava bem alta, o que me envaideceu. Só isso já era motivação de sobra, mas a história do Eric e os seus pontos de vista eclipsaram quaisquer dúvidas.

É a minha primeira colaboração internacional, mesmo assim fiquei orgulhoso do nosso trabalho, o que acham?

Recently, this past December, I had the privilege of being invited by Eric Skillman (ericskillman.com), Art Director for the Criterion Collection, Illustrator, Writer and (to my surprise) a wonderfull colorist, to work in "EGG Hard-Boiled Stories" featuring talents like Connor Willumsen, Jhomar Soriano, Joe Dellagata and Dan Duncan.
The bar was high and I was really flattered to enter.
This alone was motivation enough, but Eric's story and points of view, really of sold the deal for me.

It's my first international collaboration, and i'm proud of our work, what do you guys think?

The Lisbon Studio has one more winner, Sara Barbas our international free-lancer, patroling the Bristol/Lisbon's area, animating at Aardman and creating and directing personally short animation films.
Her film "Wherever You Go, There You Are" got the Young Director Award at this years edition of the CINANIMA International Festival.

Fly not, SUPAFLY!!

Não resisto. Ontem vi na TV nacional que a Fly London, talvez a melhor marca de calçado feminino nacional (sim, eu compro sapatos para a minha deusa) inaugurou uma linha biodegradável.

Noise Scraps

Como Al Gore diria, acredito em reciclagem.
Esta ilustração fez-se sem pensar muito, uso sempre uma folha aparte para limpar o pincel e o aparo. Então começei devagarinho a dar um sentido a todos aqueles traços e foi assim que saiu...
Não é realmente uma ilustração (acabada e tal...), é um resto barulhento...

This one was done without much thinking, I always use a separate sheet to clean the excess out of my brush and sable. So I started, slowly, giving a sense to all that cleaning strokes and this was what came out of it

"Layouts" fresquinhos e acabadinhos de sair do scanner!

Desafio-vos a tentar perceber estes gatafunhos!
Claro que seria mais fácil com o "script", mas bolas! É o processo...

Essencialmente são para me manter com os pés no chão e estabelecer o ritmo da história de maneira a ter o desafio & coerência em cada fase de produção, visto que estou a fazer tudo do "script" à balonagem.

Esta história em particular tem vários e diferentes ambientes, o personagem principal está em viagem... acho que isso, e uma grande luta de rua em Macau são os maiores desafios no que toca ao desenho...

Quanto ao "script", tenho que admitir que me estou a esticar... já que estou a trabalhar com dois grandes "clichés" portugueses, o marinheiro e o fadista.

I dare you guys, to try and understand these things!
Of course it's easier with a script and all, but what the heck!
It's the process...

They're essentially to keep me grounded and establlish the pace of the story, in order to have a kind of challenge & coherence in each stage of the production since i'm doing everything from script to lettering.

This story in particular has a bit of different enviroments, the main character is travelling... so I guess that, and a big street fight in Macau, are the greatest drawing challenges...

As for the script, I realize I'm stretching the rope here... since i'm working with two portuguese clichés, the sea traveller and the fado singer/guitar player.

A Fisgada | The Catch

Aqui está, completa e revisto o meu último bébé...
Chama-se "A Fisgada" e foi inspirada em relatos de jornal acerca do (sempre crescente) tráfico de órgãos. O que me interessava aqui eram as pessoas por isso afastei-me de uma leitura mais realista e detalhada desse tráfico puz-me a brincar com o envolvimento pessoal dos personagens...

Here it is, revised and complete, my last baby...
It's called "The Catch" and was inspired in newspapers reports about the (ever growing) organ trafficking. What interested me here, were the people so i went beyond a more realistic and detailed look to the traffic, and focused more on the characters personal involvment...
